We know, neck and back pain is the worst. It’s a particularly insidious kind of discomfort that works its way into nearly every facet of your life. You hurt when sitting down, after you’ve gone to bed, while you’re walking — pretty much constantly. But why does it happen, and how long does recovery take?

In most cases, neck pain is due to degenerative changes occuring in the upper spine. Recovery depends on the severity of the condition as well as the duration. However, once treatment starts,, about 50% of patients feel extensive pain relief within two weeks and 90% of patients experience pain-free mobility within three months.

As far as back pain is concerned, sometimes it can be caused by a muscular strain. In this case, the problem usually resolves itself fairly quickly. With lower back pain, problems with the disc are most common with people between the ages of 20 and 60. For people 60 years old and over, the culprit is more often either the facet joints or osteoarthritis.
